DRAGON BOAT
ICF CCWC VENICE 2017
Venice, world dragon boat capital.
The ICF confirmed that the 2017 World Club Crew Championships will be held in Venice. Initially allocated to Treviso, this important event changed its location following an agreement between the ICF and the Organising Committee of Venice Canoe & Dragon Boat.
The ICF World Club Crew Championships will take place in September 2017 in the Venetian lagoon and will be organised by the Organising Committee of Venice Canoe & Dragon Boat, a club founded in 2003 and organisers of the 2015 ECA European Dragonboat Championships in Auronzo, which saw the participation of 1350 athletes from 11 countries.
“This important event will create about 50 jobs and will have a positive impact for tourism in the Venice area" – said Andrea Bedin, head of the organising committee, together with Maria Balanos, Paolo Visentin, Damiano Carraro and Angelo Andreatta – "we are expecting around 3,000 athletes from all parts of the world where the dragonboat is an important sporting discipline. We are ready for a great event and we know it will be hard work, but we are sure that Venetian, local and national bodies, some of which have already expressed interest, will be our partners in this important challenge."
The Organisers have already begun first actions into the regatta course with a specific analysis about water conditions and location. On 14 May 2016, the third edition of the “Venice International Dragon Boat Festival” will be held as a test event for the 2017 ICF World Club Crew Championships. The Festival is also organised by Venice Canoe & Dragonboat, who has become one of the most important points of reference for the dragonboat sport in Italy.
Last, but not least, and not neglecting the importance of the social role of this discipline, on April 4, Venice Canoe begins its school project, ‘Know Venice By Water’, now in its 13th year, aimed at Venetian students. This project has, over the years, introduced thousands of young people to this sport, improving socialisation and sporting skills, and getting to know better the unique Venetian lagoon.
